Print ID cards at PVC size

A card downloaded from DigiLocker arrives as a PDF sitting in the middle of an A4 page. Printed as it is, the card comes out the wrong size and will not fit a PVC pouch — because the PDF never states how large the card is meant to be.

CR80 is the standard

85.6 × 54 mm, the same as a debit card or a driving licence. Printed at that size a card fits any laminating pouch and any wallet. The Aadhaar PVC card is 86 × 54, four tenths of a millimetre wider, which makes no practical difference.

Resolution is where quality is lost

At 150 dpi the small print blurs and the QR code stops scanning, which makes the card useless for the one purpose it exists for. This page works at 600 dpi, so a card is 2020 × 1276 pixels and the code reads cleanly off the paper.

Set the printer to Actual size

This is the single most common reason a printed card comes out wrong. Leaving the printer on Fit to page rescales everything and undoes the work. Choose Actual size or 100%, print one sheet, and measure a card with a ruler — the width should be 85.6 mm.

Two cards on one page

Several downloads put the front and the back on the same page — MahaSarathi stacks them, and the Ayushman card has its information panel beside it. The tool detects blocks of content separated by white space and treats each as its own card, so a two-card page produces two cards rather than one badly cropped one. The message tells you how many were found before it lays them out.

A full Aadhaar letter is different: the card sits in a corner under a page of text, and automatic detection cannot be trusted there. Crop the card first with an image tool or the crop tool on the home page, then bring it here.

A note on Aadhaar

Printing Aadhaar cards at an unauthorised centre is not permitted. An official PVC card should be ordered through the UIDAI portal. This page is for keeping a copy of your own card at the right size.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a PVC ID card?

85.6 by 54 mm, called CR80. It is the same size as a debit card or a driving licence, so it fits any standard laminating pouch.

Why does my printed card come out the wrong size?

The printer is almost certainly set to Fit to page. Change it to Actual size or 100%, then measure a printed card — the width should be 85.6 mm.

What DPI should I print an ID card at?

600 dpi. At 300 it is acceptable, but below that the small print blurs and the QR code stops scanning, which makes the card useless.

How many cards fit on an A4 sheet?

Ten CR80 cards, in two columns of five, with a 3 mm gap and cutting guides around each.
