Fifty kilobytes is the limit on most recruitment exam forms, university admission portals and bank KYC uploads. It is roughly twice as generous as the 20 KB some state portals demand, which means the face stays noticeably sharper and you have room to work with.
A form that says 20 to 50 KB means both numbers. A 15 KB file is refused just as firmly as a 60 KB one, and this catches people out constantly because every compression tool they have used before only ever asked about the ceiling.
This page opens with the band set to 20–50 KB. The quality is raised or lowered until the file lands between the two, rather than being pushed as far down as it will go.
The Maharashtra Public Service Commission also caps the photograph at 50 KB, but its pixel range is 125–130 by 150–170 — smaller and a different proportion from the 200 × 230 used here. A file that is the right weight but the wrong shape is still refused, usually with an unhelpful message about dimensions. Use the MPSC resizer for that form, and read the MPSC size guide for the exact numbers.
Getting the kilobytes right while the dimensions are wrong is the commonest near miss. If the form states a pixel size, open More options and set width and height before you worry about the compression at all. If it states nothing, 200 × 230 is a safe general-purpose form photo.
Stand against a plain light wall in even daylight, face the camera squarely, and fill the frame with your head and shoulders. A photograph taken from across a room leaves the face occupying a fraction of the pixels, and no amount of processing recovers that. Avoid flash, which flattens the face and reflects off spectacles.
Keep the original file. Every round of compression throws away detail for good, so always work from the full-size picture rather than from an already-compressed copy.
If the form states a size, use that. If it does not, 200 x 230 pixels is a safe general-purpose form photograph and sits comfortably inside 50 KB.
Yes. A form that states 20 to 50 KB rejects a 15 KB file. Both ends of the range are enforced, and most compression tools ignore the lower one.
The weight is right but the shape is not. MPSC wants 125 to 130 pixels wide by 150 to 170 high, which is smaller than the 200 x 230 used here. Use the MPSC resizer instead.
No. Everything happens inside your browser and the file never leaves your device.
