FitPadded, never cropped

A signature is landscape — 256 pixels wide by 64 tall, four times wider than it is high. A photograph is portrait. Forcing a signature into a portrait frame stretches it into something that does not match the specimen on file, and that single mistake causes more rejections than the file size ever does.

Padded, not cropped

This page fits the signature inside the frame and pads the rest with white. It never crops, because a signature with its tail cut off is not your signature. If your scan is much taller than it is wide, the result will have white space at the sides — that is correct and portals accept it.

Signing and photographing it

Sign on plain white paper with a black or dark blue pen. Pencil and light-coloured ink all but disappear once the file is compressed, and a signature the officer cannot see is a signature that is not there. Avoid ruled or squared paper — the lines survive the scan and end up in the file.

Photograph it square on in even light, with no shadow from your hand falling across the paper, then trim the surrounding blank paper so the signature fills the frame. If the background comes out grey rather than white, run it through Signature Cleanup before resizing.

The 5 KB floor catches almost everyone

A signature is a simple image — a few dark strokes on white — so it compresses further than a photograph ever would. Ordinary tools push it to three or four kilobytes, and Aaple Sarkar then refuses it for being too small while the error talks about size in a way that sounds like it is too large.

This page holds the floor as well as the ceiling.

Other forms want other sizes

256 × 64 covers Aaple Sarkar, the gazette portal and police verification. MPSC wants 125–130 by 50–60 under 50 KB. MHT-CET states 3.5 × 1.5 cm, which is 413 × 177 pixels, between 1 and 30 KB. Caste validity wants no more than 300 × 400 with the applicant signature under 20 KB and the parent signature under 50. The full comparison is in the size list.

JPEG only for the signature on most portals — the photograph is often allowed PNG and TIFF as well, but the signature is not.

Frequently asked questions

What is the signature size for Aaple Sarkar?

256 pixels wide by 64 pixels high, between 5 KB and 20 KB, in JPEG. It is landscape, four times wider than it is high.

Why is my signature rejected for being too small?

A signature is a simple image and compresses very far. Most tools push it to three or four kilobytes, below the 5 KB minimum the portal enforces.

Can I sign with a pencil?

No. Pencil and light ink vanish once the file is compressed. Use a black or dark blue pen on plain unlined white paper.

Is the signature the same size as the photograph?

No. The photograph is portrait, 160 by around 205 pixels. The signature is landscape, 256 by 64. Using one shape for the other is the commonest reason an upload fails.
