Police verification document upload size

RequirementValue
Document upload size75 – 100 KB per file
FormatJPEG (a scanned PDF page must be converted)
File namesNo spaces, dots or special characters
Photo and signatureA different limit — 5 to 20 KB

The Maharashtra Police verification portal refuses a document upload for two entirely separate reasons, and the message it shows runs both together: File size Invalid or Invalid File Name. Most people read the word size and start compressing, which is often the wrong half.

The size band is narrow, and it has a floor

Each document must sit between 75 KB and 100 KB. That is a narrow window, and unusually it is enforced from below as well. A photograph forwarded through WhatsApp is typically 40 to 60 KB and is refused for being too small, which almost nobody expects.

An ordinary compressor only takes a file under a ceiling and will happily push it to 30 KB. What is needed here is a tool that holds the file inside a band. This page opens with 75 to 100 KB already set.

The file name is the other half

A file arriving from a phone is called something like WhatsApp Image 2026-09-07 at 9.21.45 PM.jpg or New Doc 09-07-2026 15.09.pdf — spaces, dots, brackets, a colon. The portal refuses it however correct the size is, and still blames the size in the message.

This tool renames every output 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg in the order you added the files, so nothing has to be renamed by hand. Upload them in that same order and keep a note of which is which, since the names no longer say.

The same file-name rule applies on Aaple Sarkar, MPSC and most other government portals. The full list of characters they reject is in why government portals reject a file name.

Scanned PDFs

A PDF scanned on a phone runs to several thousand kilobytes and cannot be squeezed into 100 KB while staying readable. Drop the PDF in anyway — each page comes back as its own JPEG inside the band. If a document runs to several pages, upload only the page the form actually asked for.

Which documents

The application asks for supporting documents in named slots — a school leaving or birth certificate, Aadhaar, election card, and a letter from the employer or an application to the Commissioner or Superintendent of Police for the NOC. Each slot takes one file, and each file has to meet the 75 to 100 KB limit on its own.

If your name is spelled differently across these documents — after marriage, or a mismatch between Aadhaar and the school certificate — verification can be held up. The fix is a Gazette name change, which makes one spelling official.

The photo and signature are not the same

The photograph and signature on the same application use a completely different specification — 160 × 205 pixels and 5 to 20 KB for the photo, 256 × 64 pixels for the signature. Preparing them at 75 KB will fail. They are covered on the photo and signature page.
